Namibia is renowned for its vast open spaces, mountain ranges, and inselbergs rising from wild gravel plains. These are interwoven with riverbeds and countless small drainage lines, creating a truly unique and awe-inspiring landscape.

Nakop
Nakop is a small town and border post in northwestern South Africa, near its border with Namibia. It lies just ten kilometres north of the Orange River. In August 1914, this town witnessed the first conflict between German and South African troops during World War I over control of German South West Africa.
The Kokerboom (Quiver Tree).
The kokerboom, or quiver tree, grows on rocky hillsides in southern Namibia, forming huge forests. These trees are named after the San hunters, who used their hollowed-out bark to store arrows. Each branch typically has about 20 grey-green leaves, up to 35 cm long and 5 cm wide at the base.

The Gemsbok.
The beautiful gemsbok is relatively common across Namibia and much of southern Africa. As one of the few antelope that doesn’t require frequent water, it thrives in desert conditions. Gemsbok are typically seen in herds of 10 to 20 individuals, creating a spectacular sight against the arid backdrop.
Klein-Aus Vista.
Camping at Klein-Aus Vista is a magical experience. The site boasts ten campsites and several hiking trails that run through the valley. There’s nothing like the camaraderie around a campfire or the enchantment of a star-filled sky rich with ancient myths.
The Wild Horses of the Garub Plains.
The origin of the 100 or so wild horses that roam freely on the Garub Plains in Namibia’s desert remains a mystery. Some say they are descendants of shipwreck survivors, while others believe they were left behind by German forces at the end of World War I.
Whatever their origin, these horses are now an integral part of Namibia’s landscape, perfectly adapted to their harsh environment. For many, they represent a blissful sense of wild freedom.

Luderitz.
Luderitz is famous for its fresh seafood… think rock lobster, oysters, and mussels! This coastal town is also known for its brightly painted German Art Deco architecture and historical buildings. The town dates back to 1883 when Heinrich Vogelsang purchased Angra Pequena and the surrounding land on behalf of Adolf Luderitz.

Back to Upington.
We returned to Upington and spent the night at Sun River Kalahari Lodge. Can you believe it? We got the Honeymoon Suite- what a luxurious treat!
After 3,939 kilometres, we finally arrived home, safe and sound. What an unforgettable holiday it was – breathtaking views, wonderful new friends, and countless memories. None of it would have been possible without Uncle Charlie and Aunty Beverly. Thanks to them, we’ll cherish this beautiful experience forever.
